Star Chefs bring Sizzling Cookery Action

13th June 2012

A red-hot line up of star chefs are set to bring sizzling cookery action to this year’s Halifax Food and Drink Festival, the town’s largest culinary celebration. Taking place in under two weeks on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June around the Halifax Borough Market, on Southgate and Russell Street, the full festival line-up has now been finalised and it promises to be a feast of fun!

“It’s our strongest line up ever. With so many talented chefs and amazing producers taking part, every minute of each day will be cram packed with fun! We’ve got fantastic live demonstrations, brilliant cookery workshops, delicious flavours, an exciting array of hot food and the very best fare from Yorkshire of course. What’s more it’s FREE ENTRY so there really is no reason for anyone to miss out.” said Michay Matthews of Marketing Halifax.

Hosted by regional radio station Real Radio and their popular presenters Pete Egerton and Elisa Hilton, the cookery theatre will be open from 11am each day and offer a different demonstration every single hour.

On the Saturday, Ben Varley, Head Chef at the Rock Hotel and previous contestant on BBC’s Masterchef: The Professionals, will go head to head with local favourite Lee Marshall of Design House Restaurant and the more recent Design House in Town, Halifax’s first and only champagne bar. The professionals will create two very different versions of a well-known dish and leave it to the audience to choose between classical flair or the unique modern twist!

Heating things up even further will be the lovely ladies from the Raman Family, winners of The Hairy Biker Cook-Off 2010. Demonstrating a delectable platter of fusion vegetarian starters using a selection of their home made relishes, they will create 2 or 3 tasty dishes that can be easily re-created at home.

Other local chefs ready to whip up some tasty surprises on stage that day include Coddy’s Farm demonstrating pork butchery, Andrew Jones Pies re-creating his award-winning pies, Buttercream Cupcakes sharing cupcake decoration skills and Sushi Tuesday for a sneak peek at making sushi selections.

On the Sunday, Timothy Bilton from the Butchers Arms in Hepworth and former contestant on BBC’S Great British Menu will be cooking seasonal dishes using the best local produce Yorkshire has to offer; Tom Rennolds 2012 Finalist on BBC’s Masterchef will be showing how to get the best out of some great Yorkshire artisan produce, using Womersley Fruit & Herb Vinegars; and Executive Chef at The Cooking School at Dean Clough and Former Chef to the Prime Minster, Matthew Benson-Smith, will be delivering an unmissable demo based around duck.

Further taste sensations will be served by Zouk Tea Bar & Grill and their Indian cuisine whilst Gourmet Kitchenware will be demonstrating all there is to know about knife sharpening. What’s more there’s treats for children too who can get marvellously messy with hands on cookery activity in the NHS Calderdale Mobile Cooking Bus through their numerous different sessions.
